Early California Accelerated Steel Bridge Construction

This Steel TIPS describes many of the techniques used to fabricate and erect the massive west coast orthotropic box girder steel bridges that were built in the 1960's and 1970's. There is a stricking similarity to the methods being suggested for retrofiting and/or replacing bridges in the anticipated federal funding program that is currently mandated by the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, and Efficient Transportation Act (SAFETEA) of 2003. This TIPS should help Engineers, Fabricators, and Contractors as they consider bridge projects.
